Over the past couple of days, waterspouts have been in the news, from Lake Michigan this past Saturday to Lake Erie today.
Waterspout typically form because of temperature differences between water and air above it. This past weekend, relatively cool air moved over the relatively warm Great Lakes waters, setting up a favorable weather environment for these phenomena to form.
