BEIJING -- Shanghai and a nearby coastal province are hunkering down for what might be one of the worst typhoons in years.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that Shanghai, the country's financial hub, was planning to evacuate 200,000 people and that the adjoining Zhejiang province had evacuated 130,000. It says more than 30,000 ships are taking shelter in ports.

The China Meteorological Administration expects Typhoon Haikui to land between coastal cities Ningbo and Wenzhou by late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

The center issued an alert saying the typhoon will bring heavy rains and strong winds for 48 hours.

Xinhua quotes the Zhejiang provincial observatory as saying the typhoon's winds will hit 144 kilometers (89 miles) per hour.
