CHARLESTON, South Carolina - Tropical Storm Beryl may be downgraded but it's not losing its punch.

Carteret County Emergency Services director Jo Ann Smith says three homes were destroyed and dozens of others damaged as the remnants of Beryl skimmed the North Carolina coast.

There were no reports of injuries. Heavy rains from the storm caused some scattered street and lowland flooding near Wilmington, N.C. Beryl is expected to gain strength even as it loses its tropical characteristics.

Forecasters say tropical force winds of more than 39 miles an hour are expected to stay off the North Carolina coast so no coast warning have been posted. However there are warnings of dangerous surf conditions including rip currents.
