GATES MILLS -- The 104-year-old, village-owned dam across the Chagrin River in Gates Mills off Chagrin River Road near Old Mill and Deerfield roads completely failed this morning, due to heavy rains and melting snow.
The picture shows the River Road bridge over the Chagrin River near Wilson Mills Road, a few miles downstream from the dam just before noon Monday.
The NWS immediately issued a flash flood warning for downriver towards Willoughby Hills, Eastlake and Willoughby but that warning was cancelled just after 11 a.m.
The NWS says the flood waters from the dam break have since receded and the dam failure will no longer impact the river stage along the Chagrin.
Officials are still urging residents along the Chagrin River to take action now in the event of rapidly rising water.
