Video: Superman license plate unveiled in Cleveland

CLEVELAND -- It took an effort worthy of a superhero but now Ohio drivers can buy license plates honoring Superman.

Beginning today, Ohio drivers can buy the specialty plates that feature the insignia synonymous with Clark Kent's alter ego, Superman.

State Rep. Bill Patmon introduced the bill.  It took two years, but finally the measure made it through the legislative process after being attached to the budget.

Patmon and members of the Siegel and Shuster Society together unveiled the plate at the site of Jerry Siegel's boyhood home on Kimberley Avenue in Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood this morning.

While demand for the plates is global thanks to the enormous popularity of Superman, only Ohio drivers can buy the specialty plates.  About half of the extra fees for the specialty plate will go to the Siegel and Shuster Society towards future projects.

Society President Mike Olszewski read a statement from Siegel's daughter who expressed her gratitude for the plate honoring her father's creation and mused how her father would have been delighted to see cars bearing the Superman insignia.

Besides the Superman symbol, the plates carry the "Truth, Justice and American Way" phrase associated with the Man of Steel.
