Peninsula: Quality of local corn crop

PENINSULA -- It's the perfect vegetable for a backyard barbecue -- corn on the cob.

Last year's wild weather caused a late start for local farmers, but what about this year?

The tractors are silent at Szalay's Sweet Corn Farm in Peninsula, but soon, the tassels will fly as they've done for 83 years.

Paula Szalay and her family own the farm and vegetable market. The corn looks great, but all the rain we've had slows things down.

"It's very good, we're happy with the quality, but it won't be ready til about the 12th," Szalay says.

They have Ohio sweet corn on hand from the Marietta area. Honey and cream is the variety. Paula's son, John, gives an ear-full on the science of corn. It's all about pollen and silk.

"When the pollen falls from the tassel, it has to land on each and every one to give you a full ear of corn," he explains. "You gotta know your farm, you gotta know what works and what doesn't work and we really try to hone it in so every time you come down here, you get a good ear of corn."

There is corn here that is knee high at this point -- but it's part of a corn maze coming in September.

Until then, let the harvest of smiles begin.
