LOS ANGELES - Six half-marathon runners have been hospitalized for heat-related illnesses as Southern California braced for another sizzling day.

The Pasadena Fire Department says the runners who required medical attention today were extremely dehydrated and some experienced cramps. Several other runners were evaluated along the route but were not taken to the hospital.

Paramedics were deployed along the 13.1-mile race and buses with air conditioning were provided for runners to cool off. The event was supposed to be a marathon but it was downgraded due to low turnout last year.

The National Weather Service says valley and desert regions could experience their hottest days today.

Several Southern California communities set record highs for the date yesterday, including Palm Springs, where the temperature climbed to 122 degrees.
