SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- Police are investigating reports of a gunman at the University of Rhode Island, and the university says no injuries have been reported.
The school in South Kingstown wrote on its Twitter feed late Thursday morning that it was investigating a possible gunman on campus.
It told people to seek shelter and stay where they were. Shortly after 12:30 p.m., the school said no injuries had been reported, but that people should still stay indoors. The school also canceled classes for the day.
Steven O'Donnell, head of the Rhode Island State Police, tells The Associated Press there is no evidence of an active shooter. O'Donnell says the gunman was reported at Chafee Hall, which houses several departments and some college administration offices.
Messages left with URI spokespeople were not immediately returned.
