CANTON -- Mayor William J. Healy II asked for and accepted the resignation of Rick Perez effective 6 p.m. Monday because of questions arising about the hiring process for Canton/Stark County Crime Lab Directors' position, according to a statement released by Healy.

"This is about the process.  I reviewed the situation and concluded that the hiring process was not handled appropriately," says Mayor Healy.

"Protecting the integrity and credibility of the crime lab is our top priority."

Healy plans to discuss the reposting of the position and the interview process with SCOG members this afternoon.

Rick Perez intends to reapply for the position.

Healy said his decision to ask Perez, 57, to step down was not about the former chief deputy of the Stark County Sheriff's Office, but the process used to hire him and the lack of communication with the countywide board that funds the crime lab.

Healy also said he was unaware that Safety Director Thomas Ream lowered the required qualifications on a job description for the director's post.
