PARMA -- A family of three safely escaped an overnight house fire in Parma, but two of their canine companions were not so lucky.
A mother and two sons escaped the fire that broke out at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday on Maysday Avenue.
The family woke up to the smell of smoke. There were no working smoke detectors in the home.
One of the sons climbed out of a window, onto a porch and jumped to the ground from there. He suffered a cut on his hand while escaping the home, but was treated at the scene.
The mother was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Both the son and mother refused hospitalization.
The other son was not injured.
Two of the family dogs were killed in the fire. One made it out safely and survived.
A total of 15 firefighters battled the flames and none were reported injured. Most of the damage was in the kitchen.
Damage to the home is estimated at about $60,000.
