AKRON -- Two people were arrested late Wednesday night after leading police on a high-speed chase that lasted several minutes.
Akron Police say it all started around 10:30 p.m. when a 27-year-old man was reportedly robbed at gunpoint. Two suspects allegedly stole his cell phone, wallet, $4 in cash and a cigar as he was walking at the intersection of Rankin and Brown streets.
When officers spotted the getaway vehicle, a short chase ensued with officers from the University of Akron and the APD.
The passenger then bailed out of the moving vehicle on Vernon Odom Boulevard and Fern Street as the driver continued until he wrecked the SUV into a nearby house.
Both suspects were taken into custody following a brief foot chase.
18-year-old Dierre Thomas Payne has been charged with robbery, receiving stolen property (auto) and failure to comply with police orders. He has been booked in the Summit County Jail.
The second suspect, a 16-year-old man, was placed in the custody of the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with robbery.
The Chevy Tahoe they were driving was reported stolen.
Officers say they also recovered an airsoft pistol, used in the robbery, in the vehicle.
