CUYAHOGA COUNTY -- Voters rejected a proposed replacement tax levy that would have generated $90 million for the Port Authority in the next five years.
Issue 108 was defeated with 285,301 votes against the levy and 218,215 votes cast in favor of the levy, according to unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.
Those in favor of the levy said the money would pay for improvements to the Cuyahoga River and downtown lakefront areas and protect 18,000 jobs.
Some officials questioned putting the levy on a ballot with the Cleveland Municipal School District levy -- Issue 107 -- possibly making voters choose between their local school levies and the port.
Issue 107 passed.
