CLEVELAND -- An abandoned house was on fire on Cedar Avenue at East 48th Street. Original information had the location near East 55th Street.
The smoke could be seen for miles and the house was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
The fire department confirms that the three-story, boarded-up house was vacant and that it appears to have been divided into several apartments years ago.
Two nearby schools were dismissed when the fire broke out just before 3 p.m. Neighbors say that homeless people and squatters used the vacant home to sleep in.
Neighbor Andre Smith said that he had predicted that either by accident or arson, that something like this was going to happen.
Fire Department Spokesman Larry Gray says the arson investigation unit has just begun to process the scene and that at this point, the fire has been classified as "suspicious."
Estimated damage is $100,000 and 11 fire companies fought the blaze. It was determined that it was just shy of a triple-two alarm fire.
