CLEVELAND -- Two RTA bus operators are recovering after having hot coffee thrown on them.

According to the Greater Cleveland RTA Police Department, driver Charles Tolbert was attacked around 10:30 a.m. Monday. He had picked up a passenger on his number 48 bus at Adelbert and Euclid Avenue.

The passenger, a man said to be about 25 years old, refused to pay his fare and became rude and irate when Tolbert asked him to pay. When the bus reached the University Cedar station, Tolbert stepped off to use the employee restroom during a layover.

He says when he came out of the restroom the man who refused to pay the fare was waiting for him and threw hot coffee into his face. Some of the coffee splashed onto the face of another RTA employee, Jose Estrada.

The attacker ran away up Cedar Hill and has yet to be identified..

The two victims were taken to the Cleveland Clinic to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, but Tolbert told RTA Police he was in too much pain to make a statement until he was treated.

Tolbert's son told WKYC his father returned to the Cleveland Clinic on Tuesday to have another treatment to his eye.

Transit police are continuing thier investigation.
