AKRON -- Criminal charges have been filed against a Tallmadge woman in a Sept. 6 traffic crash that killed a woman from Akron.
Police charged Phyllis Treich, 61, of Tallmadge, with aggravated vehicular homicide, operating a vehicle while impaired with a blood alcohol content of 0.162 and traveling the wrong way on the expressway.
Just after 10 p.m. Sept. 6, Treich was driving the wrong way on Interstate 76 eastbound in the westbound lanes near the Seiberling Street and Brittain Road exit ramp.
Treich's vehicle, a 2006 Dodge Durango, struck a 2006 Ford Fusion head-on, causing the vehicle to rotate counterclockwise in the middle lane.
The Ford Fusion was then struck by another car, a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am.
The driver of the Ford Fusion, Karon Briggs, 57, of Akron, was critically injured and taken to a local hospital where she later died.
Treich was booked into the Summit County Jail.
