ELYRIA -- Prosecutors have dropped a misdemeanor assault charge against a corrections officer at the Lorain County Jail while federal authorities investigate the incident.
The corrections officer was placed on paid leave after a video of the July incident involving a scuffle with an inmate was reviewed.
The incident happened as the corrections officer and a nurse were dispensing medications. The inmate refused meds leading to an eventual physical confrontation with the corrections officer.
The officer told investigators the inmate had become agitated, refused commands to settle down and made a verbal threat.
Investigators reviewed the tape, however, and found inmate was not the aggressor in the incident.
The federal investigation will determine whether additional charges should be filed.
