CLEVELAND -- Police say a man was playing basketball in the third-floor gym at the Cory Recreation Center when three men tried to rob him and shot him in the leg.
Police say the victim, 37, was at the Cory Recreation Center at East 105th Street and Drexel Avenue about 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Cleveland Police Sgt. Sam Morris says 8 to 10 people were in the gym playing basketball or playing cards, when two men in black hoodies came in and started shooting baskets.
They soon let in a third man, who was wearing a red hoodie, through a back door.
The three men began to rob everyone in the gym at gunpoint, and when one of the basketball players refused to turn over his money, he was shot.
The victim was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center with a non-life-threatening injury.
The robbers then ran from the center and have not been found. Police say at least two of them were armed.
The building also houses the Cory United Methodist Church, which operates a daycare and a Head Start program in the basement on the far side of the building.
None of the children at the daycare or the Head Start were hurt.
