CAMPO, California - Authorities now say a wildfire in San Diego County has destroyed 20 homes and damaged 10 others as it crawls through the rural backcountry.
State fire Capt. Mike Mohler says damage assessment crews made that estimate Monday morning along the path of a 2,000-acre fire. Another 80 homes in rural southeastern communities of the Campo area remain under mandatory evacuation orders.
The fire that erupted Sunday in hilly brushlands has shown little movement, but Mohler says winds are picking up and could reach 25 mph in the afternoon.
Farther north, a 150-acre wildfire in Riverside County is about 90 percent contained. It has been reduced mainly to embers but still poses a potential threat to as many as 200 homes in the Murrieta area.
