In Northeast Ohio, thousands of children have nowhere to sleep. And the sweet dream of one local agency is to help families get the beds they need.
Of all the donated items in the Cleveland Furniture Bank, there are plenty of drawers and dressers, plenty places to sit with couches and chairs, but rarely a place to sleep.
"Here we are in Northeast Ohio and literally thousands of kids are sleeping on a floor, or on a blanket on the floor," says Executive Director, Tim Gaghan.
He says they get old mattress donations that are cleaned and sanitized.
"But we never have enough and most of what we get are King and Queen sized beds."
And demand is high. Everyday, they have 10 families come in needing kid-sized beds. To answer that need, they've kicked off a campaign, "Beds for Kids".
"And our goal is to provide every child of every family that's referred to us through the participating agencies a brand new bed and a mattress for them to sleep on."
That would mean a little over 1,000 beds a year.
Furniture stores, like Levin, are stepping up to help the cause.
"Robert Levin has donated hundreds of trailers to the Cleveland Furniture Bank. It's something he's very proud of and something we plan to do in the future."
It's a simple necessity and a simple act through out our community can mean a peaceful night sleep for those in need and those who want to help.
$100 dollars will provide a bed or a bed and a trundle for a family.
We were so moved by the need in our community, WKYC has pledged one thousand dollars to help buy these beds and Levin Furniture is matching our pledge.
