BILLINGS, Mont. - Authorities in Montana say rapidly-expanding wildfires over much of the southern part of the state have caused injuries and burned additional homes, buildings and vehicles.

Firefighters are trying to contain the flames amid hazardous conditions. The toll taken by the fires isn't yet known. But there are more than 150 homes still threatened by fires that, in some cases, are burning unchecked.

The forecast calls for high temperature and unpredictable winds, making the fight more difficult. At least nine large fires are burning in Montana. Officials say that is leading to increasing competition for the available resources.

A fire in the small town of Pine Creek has prompted an evacuation in the surrounding area. The fire burned a number of houses and buildings there, but spared a well-known lodge, a church, and a one-room school. An estimated 100 homes are threatened by a fire south of Butte
