PAINESVILLE Township -- A Lake County Sheriff's deputy wins a foot chase when he catches up with a suspect in a daylight home burglary.

At 11:32 a.m. Thursday, the Lake County Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call from a resident on Fremont Avenue in Painesville Township.

She said she heard a noise outside and, upon investigating, saw a burglar trying to pry open the back window of her neighbor's home.

Deputies were sent to the home. While enroute, the caller indicated that the intruder was alone and had made entry into the home through the window.

The caller was kept on the line to update deputies enroute to the street.

Lt. Dondorfer arrived in the area and parked one street over to the east of the residence on Fremont Avenue. While getting out of the cruiser, Dondorfer heard a woman yell, "Get out of my house."

Upon climbing over the wooden fence at the rear of that home, Dondorfer saw the suspect fleeing from the home wearing latex gloves and a black hooded sweatshirt.

Another man who lived in the area was also chasing after the suspect. Dondorfer and the man chased the suspect south down Fremont Avenue and caught him a few houses south of the location of the crime.

Lt. Sherwood and Deputy Sitz assisted in the burglary investigation.

The suspect was identified as Nicholas Schmidt, 29, of Madison, and was found to be in possession of stolen jewelry from the home on Fremont Avenue.

Schmidt was taken to the Lake County Jail and charged with burglary.

The case is still under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
