CLEVELAND -- Defense attorneys are expected to call family members and friends in the next phase of the Anthony Sowell trial that starts Monday, according to Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Administrator Greg Popovich.

In addition to family members and persons familiar with the defendant, they are expected to call experts they have hired.

They include mental health experts Dr. Dale Watson and Dr. George Woods, military expert Walter Bansley and mitigation specialist Lori James-Towns, Popovich said.

It is expected that Sowell's defense in this mitigation phase will take 4-5 days to present.

Prosecutors are expected to present 2-3 witnesses in rebuttal.

The mitigation phase is for the jury to decide whether or not to recommend to Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Dick Ambrose that Sowell receive the death penalty for his crimes.

Sowell was arrested in October, 2009 after police found the bodies of 11 women buried in and around his Imperial Avenue home in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Cleveland.

He was originally charged with 85 counts.

Sowell, who turns 52 on Aug. 19, was convicted July 22 of 82 counts against him, including aggravated murder, rape, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse.

He was found not guilty on one count of robbery and Ambrose dismissed two of the counts earlier in the trial.
