You drive less because you may not have found a gas station that has a very competitive price near your home or workplace. You go online to find the best travel deals, if you have to travel.

But are you still making the most of your food dollar?

You already know that generic grocery products are the same as brand-name products with different packaging, a way to save some money in your local grocery store.

But brand-name outlet stores are probably within a few miles of your home or work but you may have never noticed them.

Food outlets sell the same food that you find in your local grocery store, only they may be a little older, have different packaging, or be not-so-popular brands.

It's the same idea as you see with clothing outlets: they sell products that have been overstocked or resold from major grocery stores, and sold at 50 percent to 70 percent off the original retail price.

For instance, Schwebel's Bakery Outlet Thrift Stores feature bargains and discounted prices on Schwebel's Bread Products, like Giant White Enriched Bread; Schwebel's Hot Dog and Hamburger Buns; Italiano; Country Potato Bread; Roman Meal; Country Hearth; and Sunmaid Raisin Bread.

It also stocks snack cakes, bagels, English muffins, pita breads and tortillas. You can usually find all of the items you usually buy at your local grocery store.

Another bread purveyor is Wonder Bread and its outlet stores also dot the landscape.

There's a Wonder Bread/Hostess Bakery at 178 S. Forge St. in Akron, as well as one in Warrensville Heights at 18807 Miles Avenue.

Northeast Ohio's Solon is home to Stouffer's and its outlet store, at 5750 Harper Road, right inside the Stouffer's U.S. headquarters.

(Take Interstate 480 eastbound to alternate Route 422 eastbound and the first exit is Harper Road and Stouffer's is right next to the exit ramp.

Also in Solon, the King Nut Company outlet is at 31900 Solon Road, about 2 miles east-southeast from Stouffer's. It's open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Peterson Nut Company store is at 1260 Carnegie Avenue in downtown Cleveland. It's open 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Go online to the King Nut/Peterson Nut online store for more bargains.

Nearly every outlet store does not honor coupons but you can also pick and choose coupon values online as well.

If your budget lends itself to dining out inexpensively, don't wait for the dining coupons to come in the mail for restaurants you may never visit.

Go to www.restaurant.com  and buy your own discount coupon for exactly the restaurant you want and print it out on the spot.
