CLEVELAND -- A Northeast Ohio veteran has been awarded medals decades after he completed his military service including missions during World War II.
Philip Sustersic served in the Merchant Marines from October 1944 to November 1945 and completed missions in the Atlantic and Mediterranean war zones. After WWII, he joined the Army and served from 1950 to 1952.
A medal audit determined that Sustersic earned several awards during his service that were never awarded.
Rear Admiral Fred M. Midgette/Commander, Ninth Coast Guard District presented the awards to Sustersic during a ceremony Thursday morning.
Those awards included:
- Merchant Marine Emblem
- WWII Victory Medal and bar
- Honorable Service Button
- Atlantic War Zone Bar and Medal
- Mediterranean War Zone Bar and Medal
- Harry Truman Presidential Letter
