COLUMBUS -- A central Ohio man who beat a dog with a hammer and stabbed another one seven times has been sentenced to jail.
WBNS in Columbus reports 24-year-old Josh Payton on Wednesday pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges of prohibitions concerning companion animals.
The station reports Payton told Franklin County Environmental Judge Daniel Hawkins that he could not recall committing the attack in February.
Payton said he was under the influence of meth and had not slept for days.
Payton will be released in late September after receiving credit for time served.
His attorney could not be reached for comment.
The dogs were owned by Payton's ex-girlfriend, who signed over custody to the humane society.
One of the dogs was eventually adopted by a Florida family.
