The Playfair and Pathfinder are a pair of traditionally-rigged brigantines which are used in a sailing training program based in Toronto, Canada. Each ship crews 28 people, 18 of which are trainees that have never set foot on a boat before.
Capt. Patrick Shorey - Playfair
"We have 10 crew on board, up to 18 trainees on any given course. The crew range in experience. Every position is really a training position. They do a lot of stuff they didn't think they could do. Climbing aloft is a big thing. It's not just for the sake of doing something that is challenging it's actually necessary to keep the ship safe for navigation."
Aside from the captain, the entire ship's complement is between 13 and 18 years of age.
Macaulay Morton - Petty Officer, Pathfinder
"It's a lot of hard work but it's really fun. You learn a lot and it's too much fun."
