If nothing else, the Browns' 1st round draft pick has a perfect name to appeal to the Dawg Pound.
In their first pick and sixth overall, the Cleveland Browns selected LSU pass rusher Barkevious Mingo. It's a choice that fills a need and gives them a potentially scary pair of edge rushers on the heels of signing Paul Kruger in free agency.
This says to me that the Browns management is taking heed of defensive coordinator Ray Horton's wishes. We have always had a problem getting to the other team's quarterback.
You only need to think about how arch-rival Pittsburgh's quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has eluded pass rushers for years.
The Browns now have a formidable front line.
Do I wish we had picked Dee Milliner, the cornerback from Alabama? Maybe, because we still need someone in that position, but he went to the Jets at pick number nine.
And yes, I know what has been going on with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has dominated the news the past week. The FBI and IRS raided the offices of his Pilot Flying J headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee last week, amid an investigation of rebate fraud.
But this was Draft Day, and nothing else should matter. And to me, it doesn't.
In other news, the Buffalo Bills selected another one of my favorites, Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel, with the No. 16 overall pick, making him the first quarterback taken in the 2013 NFL draft Thursday.
But back to Barkevious.
So you know, his full name is Barkevious Levon Mingo and his nickname is "KeKe." Mingo, who hails from West Monroe, Louisiana, is the son of Hugh Mingo and Barbara Johnson.
He has two older brothers, Hugh and Hughtavious. His unusual first name was created by his mother, adding the first three letters of her first name to the equally random letters Kevious.
His name won the 2009 Name of the Year award in online voting.
Do you think his bark is worse than his bite? We'll see.
