Mansfield: Arrest made in Speedway 'box-cutter' robbery

MANSFIELD -- Ay 2:36 a.m. Monday, April 15,, the Richland County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to a robbery at the Speedway Gas Station located at 1394 Ashland Road.

They said an unknown white man, standing 5'5"-5'10,"weighing 140-160 pounds, wearing a homemade dark ski mask and a white hoodie, had entered the gas station armed with a box cutter and ordered the clerk to give him money from the cash register.

The suspect then took an undetermined amount of cash from the register and ran off.

The area was searched but he was not found.

Evidence was located in the area of the scene and submitted for forensic processing.

On Friday, the Violent Crimes Impact Team developed information leading to the identification of the suspect.

On Sunday, RCSO Lt. Donald Zehner recovered the weapon believed to be used in the commission of the crime.

On Monday, Lt. Zehner consulted with the Richland County Prosecutor's Office and a warrant for aggravated robbery was issued for Justin Birchell, 22, a transient,  with a $50,000 cash bond requested.

The U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force was called in to locate and arrest him.

The Marshals Task Force found and arrested Birchell on Cotter Road in Mansfield just before midnight Monday.

He is in the Richland County Jail.

On Tuesday, Birchell went to initial appearance in the Mansfield Municipal Court and now remains in jail on $50,000 cash bond.

Sheriff J. Steve Sheldon credited the newly formed Violent Crimes Impact Team, the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, the tenacity of RCSO investigators and citizen cooperation all working together to bring this violent criminal to justice.
