CLEVELAND -- The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission is just 100 days away from welcoming 10,000 athletes -- ages 50 and older -- to Northeast Ohio for two weeks of intense competition in 19 sports.

Effort to earn monetary and in-kind support to fund the games is nearing completion, and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission announced Wednesday that it has attained 95 percent of its fundraising goal.

More than 42 companies and governmental and community organizations are contributing funds, services or volunteers to support the Games.

"The hard work and planning of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and the Greater Cleveland community have set up the 2013 National Senior Games to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our athletes," says Marc Riker, National Senior Games Association CEO. "First-rate competition venues, exciting ancillary events and programming and the clear enthusiasm of the Greater Cleveland community have made this a can't miss event."

One of the largest recurring multi-sport events in the United States, the 2013 National Senior Games is expected to draw more than 28,000 people to the Cleveland area between July 19 and August 1, and the estimated economic impact is $35 million.

The 2013 Games will utilize a variety of venues throughout Northeast Ohio for both sports and hospitality.

Medal-contending competitions for the 2013 Games include pickleball, archery, badminton, basketball, bowling, race walk, road race, cycling, golf, horseshoes, racquetball, shuffleboard, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track & field, triathlon and volleyball.

Bocce ball and disc golf competitions will be held as demonstration sports during the event.

Demonstration sports have no qualification process and any athlete aged 50 and older may register for those competitions.
