NORTH CANTON -- Just after 7:30 a.m. Thursday, a resident from the 200 block of 7th St. NE. called the police department to report what he believed to be a wolf-like animal trying to get into a fenced in ball park area of Dogwood Park for some geese.
Several police officers responded to search the ballfields and a wooded area of Dogwood Park for the animal. It was not found and no real definitive evidence of an animal like this was present.
There is the possibility the animal was a very large dog or a coyote. Coyotes have been seen a few times in the city limits.
The police department has previously contacted ODNR / State Wildlife Officers about sightings like this.They are aware of these animals in Stark County.
Coyotes are being seen in our urban areas.
Police emphasize that should anyone see a coyote or like sized animal, that appears to be acting aggressively or menacing toward people or animals, to please call the police department and we will respond to your call for assistance.
Know that it is wildlife that is re-entering Stark County.
Due to these and past reports of coyote sightings in Stark County, this is a public safety reminder for all who live, work or visit the City of North Canton and to be aware of their surroundings for safety's sake.
