East Cleveland: Man shot protecting family from home invaders

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An East Cleveland homeowner was shot in the stomach while trying to protect his family from violent home invaders Tuesday evening.

The homeowner, Jason Smith, used several tactics to create a diversion, allowing his family to escape the home.

The victim's wife and three young girls were were not reported injured.

Smith was both shot with a shotgun at close range and slashed with a knife. He was taken to University Hospital and later flown to MetroHealth Medical Center where he underwent surgery overnight. He is currently in critical condition.

The home invasion was in the 1300 block of Hampton Road just before at 6:40 p.m.

No information on the suspects is available.

The house is about a block away from Chambers Elementary School.
