CLYDE, Ohio -- Families whose children have been among the dozens sickened in an Ohio cancer cluster are hiring a private company to test several areas in northern Ohio.

They've been waiting for years to find out what's behind the child cancer cluster centered in Sandusky County, between Toledo and Cleveland.

The Sandusky Register reports that a private environmental testing firm will begin work this week.

An attorney for the families that are paying for the tests say they'll be looking at dust in attics and sludge from a water reservoir and water treatment plant.

Since 1996, 35 children have been diagnosed and three have died from cancer in a 12-mile wide circle just south of Lake Erie. So far, no answers have been found.
