CLEVELAND -- Cleveland police officer Gary Steigelmeyer has been suspended for 20 work days without pay for his actions when asked to check a downed power line last fall.

Stiegelmeyer was asked to check a downed power line near East 130th Street and Iroquois Avenue just after 9 a.m. Nov. 1.

FirstEnegy was notified and Stiegelmeyer was sent to check but said he only saw a downed telephone line. Hours later, Gasia Thomas, 12, touched the wire and was shocked.

Cleveland Safety Director Marty Flask tells Channel 3 News that, "the officer did respond -- spent about 90 minutes at the scene, but left when he was reportedly advised by an AT&T repairman that it was a telephone line, not a charged power line."

"We originally convened the hearing last week, but it was continued to today. He pled no contest the charge that he failed to follow an order that required him to be 'properly relieved' prior to leaving the scene. He was suspended without pay for 20 workdays," Flask added.

Thomas left the hospital and is now at a rehabilitation facililty. Her family has filed a lawsuit against FirstEnergy and city officials.
