CLEVELAND -- As the debate on gun control laws heats up, firearms training centers across Northeast Ohio are seeing an influx in interest from gun owners.
Commence Firearms Training Academy in Cleveland is booked for the next eight weeks.
Owner Keith Campbell and his staff teach a variety of courses, from basic gun ownership safety to defensive rifle training.
Campbell says much of the interest has to do with the spotlight on gun control after the school shooting in Newtown Connecticut.
"The firearm is not the fix-all to all defensive situations, but it is a tool of last resort if a situation ever arises that gets to that point," said Campbell.
Campbell says firearms are not for everyone, and not everyone who comes to the training academy will pass the courses.
He does recommend that people considering purchasing a gun take a course first, to see if gun ownership is a commitment they want to make, from safety and storage to proper handling.
"Just the mere possession of a firearm does not make you safe. If you don't know how to use it appropriately and safely, then you probably shouldn't use it and have it," said Campbell.
