American Family Insurance All-USA Northeast Ohio
Here are this week's American Family Insurance All-Northeast Ohio Top 5 Performances from last weekend's Ohio High School Athletic Association football state championship games.
Number 5: We start at the Division I title game featuring Toledo Whitmer and Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller. Whitmer quarterback Nick Holley drops back and finds his brother Nathan Holley for a 20-yard touchdown pass to pull the Panthers within three points. In the end, though, it would not be enough, as Moeller would go on to win 20-12.
Number #4: We head now to the Division III final between St. Vincent-St. Mary and Bellevue. Parris Campbell Jr. takes it around the end and down the sideline 47 yards for the score on the Fighting Irish's second offensive play to tie the game at 7. That would be Campbell Jr.'s first of three touchdowns on the day.
Number #3: We now turn our attention to the Division V final between Kirtland and Coldwater. It's fourth-and-1 for Kirtland and quarterback Scott Eilerman fakes it to the fullback and then finds Mathew Finkler for a 4-yard touchdown reception to knot the game up at 7.
Number #2: We stay at the same contest for top performance No. 2. It's late in the fourth quarter and Kirtland trails by three points. The Hornets have Coldwater pinned on its own 1-yard line. The Cavaliers try for the bubble screen, but Kirtland's Sam Skiljan sniffs it out and stops Coldwater's Brody Hoying from getting out of the end zone. It's a safety that cuts Kirtland's deficit to 10-9. Unfortunately, the score would remain the same the rest of the contest and the Hornets would be denied back-to-back state championships.
Number #1: We head back to the Division II title tilt between St. Vincent-St. Mary and Bellevue. It's fourth-and-7 and the Fighting Irish attempt the fake punt! Newman Williams goes around the end, stepping over defenders and bouncing off another, while running through the rest as he stretches for the goal line. Touchdown! St. Vincent-St. Mary would go on to win the Division III state title by the score of 42-21.
