MENTOR -- Kevin Knight, a captain with the Mentor Police Department, has been named the city's next police chief.

City Manager Kenneth J. Filipiak made the announcement Tuesday.

"I am confident that Knight's vision for the police department, his leadership style and his ethical standards coincide with the vision and standards of this department, the administration, city council and our residents," Filipiak said in a press release.

Knight, a Mentor resident, began his career with the police department in 1981. He was promoted to captain in 2008 and is the department's most-senior captain.

Knight will be sworn in on Jan. 4, 2013 and take office the following day.

He's taking over when current chief Daniel Llewellyn retires.
