JERUSALEM -- A senior Israeli official says Iran has diverted some of its enriched uranium from military to civilian use, thereby slowing down a push for nuclear arms by some eight months.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak says this has extended what Israel considers to be a timeframe for Iran to attain an atomic bomb "until the spring or summer."

Barak spoke late Thursday in an interview with Israeli Channel 2 TV. His comments appeared to be based on a report by the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog from August.

The remarks could be an indication Israel may be delaying possible plans on striking Iranian nuclear facilities to stop Tehran from getting an atomic weapon.

Israel sees Iran's nuclear program as an existential threat. Iran insists its program is for peaceful purposes.
