AKRON, Ohio -- One firefigher was injured battling an overnight house fire that spread to neighboring homes in Akron's North Hill neighborhood.

Firefighters responded to the fire on Chalker Street, off of East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue, shortly after midnight early Monday morning.

Heavy smoke and flames were billowing out of the home. As high winds continued to blow, the heat and flames damaged neighboring homes as well.

The injured firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. There is no word on that person's condition or the extent of the injuries.

Witnesses tell fire officials they believe everyone evacuated the homes safely.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
