TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher says the Heisman Trophy is a popularity contest for "show dogs" with the winner now usually the best player on who voters feel is the best team.
Fisher bristled Monday when asked about quarterback EJ Manuel's chances of winning the award, saying rhetorically, "Show dog or hunting dog?"
Fisher says a show dog is great "If you want to parade him around and do all of that," but he'd rather have a hunting dog.
He says Manuel is a hunting dog. The third-year Seminole coach two years ago helped promote an elaborate, albeit short-lived campaign for former Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder.
Fisher did say it would be "wonderful" if Manuel won it.
Fourth-ranked Florida State is 4-0 heading into Saturday's game at South Florida.
