NORTH RIDGEVILLE -- After further questioning by Channel 3's Lynna Lai, police revealed that a man who crashed and died was involved in a police pursuit Sunday just before 3:30 a.m.
Police were called to a McDonald's on Lorain Road for a man, later identified as Jeremy Casey, 32, who was passed out in his car. While officers were enroute, someone was able to wake him.
The first officer arrived on scene and unsuccessfully attempted to stop Casey in the restaurant's drive-thru. Another officer arrived and tried to block the fleeing man who stopped temporarily.
After officers exited their cars, Casey sped off and headed north on Lear Nagle Road.
According to police, officers gave chase at a "high rate" of speed. The suspect ran off the road near U.S. Route 20, hitting a Walgreens store. Casey was ejected from the car in the crash. He later died from his injuries.
While the crash remains under investigation, police say alcohol is believed to be a factor.
The pursuit lasted less than a minute, about 1.1 miles long.
No one else was injured.
