AKRON -- Police have arrested a 37-year-old woman for allegedly forcing her pre-teen daughter into prostitution over the course of a year.
Akron Police Captain Dan Zampelli says Jacqueline Toro-Williams is now in custody for the alleged offenses, which reportedly happened in 2007 when the child was 11 years old.
Zampelli says the girl realized the situation was wrong, confided in a friend, and eventually fled to Mexico at the age of 13.
Shortly after leaving Akron, the child's guardian -- who Zampelli says was not her own mother -- filed a missing persons report.
Akron Police had been looking for the child until her location in Mexico was discovered earlier this year, with the help of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Zampelli says that the victim, now 16, returned to Akron in February of this year when she revealed to authorities what her mother had allegedly forced her to do back in 2007.
An investigation began and authorities arrested Toro-Williams last Friday on charges of compelling prostitution and promoting prostitution.
She was booked into the Summit County Jail.
