Westlake celebrates student-athlete college commitments

The Westlake High School athletic department recently recognized those senior Demon student-athletes who have signed binding national letters of intent, officially accepting scholarships offered to them by a college or university.

Below is a list of the 20 students who were honored during the May 2 ceremony. Be sure to view our photos from the event.

Julia Kosco - Hillsdale College - softball: Kosco was a co-captain, four-year letterwinner and starting third baseman on the Demons softball team. She has twice earned All-Southwestern Conference honors and was a vital member of the 2010 SWC championship squad.

David Maurer - Northern Kentucky University - baseball: Maurer, a left-handed pitcher, has lettered the past three years as a member of Westlake's baseball team. As a member of the Midwest Pelicans summer baseball team, he has pitched against some of the top competition in the nation. Maurer plans to major in criminal justice or political science.

Alyssa Zollos - Hiram College - volleyball:  Zollos was a three-year letterwinner on Westlake's volleyball team and also participated on the school's softball and track squads.

Jonathan Brick - John Carroll University - football: Brick was a three-year letterwinner on Westlake's football and baseball teams. He served as a co-captain on the football team in the fall. Brick plans to study pre-med in college.

Rachael Trujillo - Walsh University - basketball: Trujillo was a two-year letterwinner on Westlake's girls basketball team. As a senior, she served as a team captain, was voted team MVP and named an All-Southwestern Conference honoree. Trujillo plans to major in physical therapy.

Collin Brooks - Mercyhurst University - lacrosse: Brooks was a four-year letterwinner on Westlake's lacrosse team. A two-year captain, he was named a 2011 All-Region honoree. Brooks plans to major in business intelligence.

Zach Maxey - University of Mount Union - lacrosse: Maxey was a two-year letterman on Westlake's lacrosse team. Maxey plans to major in nursing.

Lexi Schmidt - Juniata College - volleyball: Schmidt was a three-year letterman on Westlake's volleyball team and was named the team's best offensive player in 2011. She plans to major in biology.

Lauren Choban - Oberlin College - swimming: Choban was a four-year letterwinner on Westlake's swimming and diving team, and was a four-time district qualifier and two-time state qualifier. She served as a captain her senior season. Choban plans to study neurology.

Chris Boardman - Hiram College - swimming: Boardman was a four-year letterman on Westlake's swimming and diving team. As a senior, he was a captain and a member of the school's district championship team. Boardman plans to major in integrated studies with a teaching license in history.

Phil Brusk - John Carroll University - football: Brusk was a two-year letterman as a member of Westlake's football and baseball teams. As quarterback of the football team in 2011, he earned All-Southwestern Conference honorable mention recognition and was named the squad's most improved player. Brusk plans to major in pre-med.

Yasmine Hirbawi - John Carroll University - soccer: Hirbawi was a member of four district finalist teams, three of which won titles.

Jordan Sanders - Dennison University - cheerleading: Sanders has been involved with cheerleading for five years and has earned eight varsity letters and four captain's pins. She plans to major in education.

Sammie Sposet - Cleveland State University - diving: Sposet was a four-year letterwinner and three-year captain on Westlake's swimming and diving team. She is a two-time state qualifier and won the SWC diving title in 2012. Sposet plans to major in biology/pre-med.

Jesse Moracz - University of Mount Union - softball: Moracz was a co-captain, four-year letterwinner and starting pitcher on Westlake's softball team. She earned All-Southwestern Conference honors each of the past three seasons and was a pivotal member of the 2010 SWC championship team.

Corey Bowers - Penn State Erie - baseball: Bowers was a two-time letterwinner on Westlake's baseball team, serving as the squad's leadoff hitter and starting left fielder. He plans to pursue a master's degree in business/marketing.

Spencer Offredo - Ohio Wesleyan University - baseball: Offredo was a two-year letterwinner on Westlake's baseball squad, playing primarily in right field. Offredo plans to major in economics/business management.

Lauren Wichman - Case Western Reserve University - soccer: Wichman was a three-year soccer letterwinner and two-time All-Southwestern Conference honoree. She also earned All-SWC honors as a starter on the school's basketball team that finished the season as a district runner-up in 2011-12. Wichman plans to major in pre-med.

Charlotte Tate - Cornell University - soccer: Tate was a four-year letterwinner on Westlake's soccer team and earned All-Ohio, All-Region IV, All-Southwestern Conference and All-Greater Cleveland honors. She was also a four-year letterwinner on the school's track team.       

Matt Bogard - Ohio State University: fencing: Bogard placed 24th last year in the World Junior fencing event held in Finland. He is a three-time Ohio State champion fencer and, most recently, won the National High School Champion Award.
