CLEVELAND -- Case Western Reserve University officials have told 600 alumni that a thief could have their Social Security numbers after two laptop computers were stolen two months ago.

The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reports that the university-owned computers had the names of 600 alumni dating back to 1987, along with their Social Security numbers.

A school official says the university discovered the thefts in late February, and notified those affected on April 4.

Chris Sheridan, a vice president at the school, said the delay was because the university needed time to determine what was on the laptops. She said it also took time to get current contact information for some of the alumni.

Sheridan says the university is paying for the alumni's identity protection insurance.

The laptops haven't been recovered.
