With strong support from thousands of people, Chardon High School has won the 2012 Rock Your Prom contest by 96.5 KISS FM with more than 70 percent of the votes.

Students from schools across the area campaigned on behalf of Chardon High School, some banding together to create Facebook pages dedicated to ensuring Chardon's victory.

The Cleveland community also campaigned for votes for the school and showed support from local businesses, several bloggers, YouTube videos and even re-tweets from Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez.

On Saturday, May 5, the school will be presented with the club-style event by 96.5 KISS FM, Rock the House Entertainment and American Commodore Tuxedo. It will feature a $5,000 prom package with concert-style lighting, video screens, digital effects and music from KISS FM Club DJ's, DJ E-V and DJ Pana.

Their victory comes on the heels of the tragic events that unfolded at the high school on Feb. 27. Early that morning, gunshots rang out leaving three dead and others wounded.

"Chardon High School graciously accepts this wonderful award that will bring great joy and something positive to look forward to this year," said Holly Mihalek, Chardon High School's prom advisor. "All of this outpouring support is appreciated and overwhelming. It has truly played a significant part in our healing process. Thank you to everyone who voted, especially the students from other schools across the area."

The Rock Your Prom contest started with the nomination process on Feb. 13. By the end, Chardon High School collected more than 50,000 votes in the contest. The contest page of KISS FM's site simply reads: "CONGRATS CHARDON!"
