On Friday morning, key stakeholders met to see what can be done.
Shippers, companies, Gilbert's casino team members, and representatives from the Port of Cleveland, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown met at the Greater Cleveland Partnership to exchange information.
Arcelor Mittal Steel and many river firms depend on ships for their raw materials and to move product. Gilbert's team proposed narrowing the river and moving the bulkhead at Collision Bend up to 31 feet to make way for more on-land parking.
Shippers say that would prevent the biggest ships from navigating the already very narrow river channel.
Casino construction will eliminate many parking spaces now at Tower City.
Altering the river's course would require an Act of Congress because federal funds are used to maintain it.
