SANDUSKY -- A man has been charged with aggravated murder in the stabbing death of an 11-week-old baby girl.

The suspect, Denzel Castile, 19, will be in court Monday morning for his arraignment. He was initially charged with felonious assault, but that was upgraded to aggravated murder when the child died.

Police said that on Thursday, they responded to a 9-1-1 call of an unknown problem at 507 Dewey Street. Upon arrival, officers found a fight taking place among several people in the home.

Officers saw Castile struggling over an infant, later identified as Athena Castile, 11 weeks.

Castile had a knife in his possession and was using the knife to assault Athena. After orders to drop the knife were given by officers, Castile dropped the knife and charged at officers.

Multiple Taser deployments and sprays were necessary to take Castile into custody.

Athena Castile was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center, where she died from her injuries in the early morning hours of May 17.

Castile was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center by Deputies of the Erie County Sheriff's Office, treated and released, and booked into the Erie County Jail on a felonious assault charge.

Detectives in the Sandusky Police Department are still working on the investigation.

After the baby died, an additional charge of aggravated murder was added.

Investigators say Castile is related to the child in some way, but is not her father.

The suspect's grandfather suffered a small cut but was injured but not seriously. The baby's mother wasn't there at the time of the stabbing.
