SUFFIELD, Ohio - -Second Annual Ice Out Hunger Icefishing Tournament raises money for Akron Canton Regional Foodbank.
There's a thin glaze of ice covering most of Wingfoot Lake, a welcome sight to Carl "Big Daddy" Bachtel, WKYC photojournalist and tournament organizer.
At last year's event, high temperatures left the lake wide open, but the iceless ice fishing tournament still raised nearly $2,000.
"We're hoping to raise at least that much this year," Bachtel says. "Sportsmen and women have giving hearts, and I just wanted to tap into that goodness to give back a little."
The charity Carl and his hearty group of ice anglers have picked is the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank. Their leveraging power takes a $1 donation and stretches it into four meals for those in need.
"The money raised last year was turned into 8,000 meals for hungry families right here in Northeast Ohio," says Michelle Hinton, who works for the fFodbank.
The event will take place Saturday, Feb. 2 at Wingfoot State Park. You can stop by the Pine Tree Lodge any time between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. to register. The entry fee is $10 per two-person team and 100 percent of the money collected goes directly to the Foodbank.
All who enter, whether you fish or not, are eligible for some fine prizes, donated by our sponsors. There will also be donuts and coffee in the morning, plus homemade chili and cornbread, chicken and noodles, and hot dogs to warm up later in the day.
"I would personally like to thank all of our sponsors," said Bachtel. "Without them, we couldn't put this event together."
Those sponsors include: JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores, Eberhart Landscaping and Lawn Service, Summit Sportsmens Association, WKYC, Inside the Great Outdoors radio, Mogadore Bait and Tackle, Portage Lakes Bait and Tackle, Gone Fishin' Bait and Tackle, Finny's Custom Fishing Rods, the Akron Aeros, Ice Fish Ohio, Battaglia's Garden Center and Ohio Game Fishing.
