LUCASVILLE, Ohio -- Ohio has carried out its 49th execution of the modern era with no apparent complications, while preparing for what could be a protracted legal battle over the 50th.

Condemned inmate Brett Hartman was put to death Tuesday for stabbing a woman 138 times, then cutting off her hands, a crime he always maintained he was innocent of doing.

Hartman declined to give a final public statement, but told warden Donald Morgan that his execution would not defeat him.

The 38-year-old Hartman was sentenced to die for killing Winda Snipes in Akron in 1997.

The next inmate scheduled to die in January, Ronald Post, wants his execution stopped because he weighs more than 400 pounds and fears he would suffer severe pain because his veins can't be accessed.
