LORAIN -- A 32-year-old man was indicted on charges of being a felon in possession of firearms after authorities say they found 40 handguns, rifles and revolvers.

Jose Romero, who has a 2005 conviction in Lorain County for domestic violence, was indicted Thursday.

"This office places a high priority on keeping firearms out of the hands of those who are forbidden by law from obtaining them," says Steven Dettelbach, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. "Whether it is a person using a gun to commit a violent crime, a felon illegally obtaining a firearm or a straw purchaser trying to circumvent the law, we will aggressively pursue those who would violate our nation's firearms laws."

Authorities say Romero told a confidential informant that he was interested in purchasing large numbers of firearms in an effort to influence their availability in Lorain.

After searching Romero's grandmother's residence on Charleston Avenue and his home on East 31st Street, officers reportedly recovered firearms, marijuana and cocaine.

If convicted, his sentence will be determined by the court after a review of factors unique to this case, including the defendants' prior criminal record, the defendants' roles in the offense and the characteristics of the violation.
