PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP -- Man arrested and charged in weekend stabbing due in court.
About 1:18 a.m. Saturday, the Lake County Sheriff's Office responded to multiple 9-1-1 call hang ups originating from 229 Newell Street in Painesville Township.
While enroute, responding deputies were advised that there sounds as if there was some type of fight taking place, however, no person was speaking directly into the line.
Deputies were advised that two men and a woman could be heard having some type of a struggle, and that dogs could be heard barking in the background.
As deputies arrived, it was quickly learned that Delonta L. Gilree, 24, had been stabbed in his chest and abdominal area. Painesville Township fire department was immediately dispatched to the scene.
George P. Caldwell, 19, was determined to be the person that had stabbed Gilree.
Caldwell said he and Gilree had been involved in a fight and that he had stabbed Gilree.
Caldwell gave deputies the folding knife that he had used to stab Gilree.
Gilree was rushed to Tri-Point Medical Center and then transferred via Lifeflight to MetroHealth Medical Center where he underwent surgery to repair internal injuries.
Gilree remains in the intensive care unit at Metro.
Caldwell was also taken to TriPoint where he was treated and released for superficial injuries he had sustained during the fight.
Caldwell was taken into custody after being treated and booked into the Lake County Jail.
Caldwell was charged with felonious assault and underage consumption.
The incident remains under investigation and Caldwell was scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 24.
